Cricket Board is looking to appoint South Africa’s former coach, Mickey
Arthur, as the head mentor of the national side.
Reportedly, Arthur has become a strong candidate to be considered for
Pakistan’s coaching position, considering his outstanding stint with the
South African cricket team.
Earlier, the legendary pacer, Waqar Younis, who also coached the
Pakistani side during the recently concluded World Cup, resigned from
his job.
After his resignation, the governing body of PCB announced a committee,
including, Intikhab Alam, Zaheer Abbas, former wicketkeeper Naushad Ali,
Ramiz Raja, to take applications for the vacant position.
The committee finalised five names to be considered for the post.
However, PCB decided not to make haste in appointing the new coach, as
the ongoing series against Sri Lanka was on the cards.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the national selection committee, Mohsin
Hasan Khan, was named as Pakistan’s interim coach against the Srilanka.
Coming back to Arthur’s possible appointment, the former Proteas coach denied that PCB has been in contact with him. “I haven’t had contact from anybody. At the moment, I would very likely be declining it,” he said while talking to the media. On the other hand, Australia’s former batsman, Dean Jones, who also applied for the post, seems eager to be considered or the position. “I've come to a time in my life where I have this opportunity to put something back into the game. I've been sniffing around to see what jobs are available. I wouldn’t have applied if I wasn’t keen,” Jones quoted. In the meanwhile, he appreciated Pakistan’s performance in the recently concluded Test series, terming them as a talented side. “They've got a big pool of talent and they’ve just done very well against Sri Lanka. They’re going gangbusters. They’ve just got to go out there and build some goodwill. Their brand has been tarnished somewhat. They’ve got to get a winning culture - I don’t think it’s tough if you’re winning,” he added
