Top Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammed Asif - involved in the match-fixing scandal surrounding last summer’s Lord’s Test - face life bans, a news report said yesterday.
According to a post on Express.co.uk, the international Cricket Council (ICC), the game’s ruling body, is keen to stamp out corruption ahead of the World Cup.
Butt, the then Pakistan captain, and swing bowler Asif are facing the maximum sentence when their case reconvenes in Doha on Saturday.
The third player, Mohammad Amir, 18, is expected to be given a five-year ban, a lighter sentence reflecting his age and gullibility at taking instructions from Butt, the report added.
Last month, ICC’s Anti-Corruption panel spent five days while conducting the hearing in the Qatari capital. Lawyers of Butt, Asif and Amir spent hours defending the players at the hearing.
The ICC, the report said, is determined to spell out they will not tolerate any form of match-rigging before the World Cup that starts in the Indian sub-continent in 17 days.
The players are accused of accepting payment for bowling no-balls at prearranged times in the fourth test against England in August at Lord’s — a fixing scandal described by the ICC as the sport’s biggest in decades.
The Dubai-based ICC charged the trio with “alleged irregular behaviour” in September after British tabloid The News of the World reported that the players received money from businessman Mazhar Majeed for “spot-fixingEarn upto Rs. 9,000 pm checking Emails. Join now!
